Hello
My name is Berlin, founder of The Spicy Cat Project. Cat behavior has always been a passion of mine. Growing up, I helped my mom with TNR (trap, neuter, release) programs, and we fostered many litters of kittens. Throughout my life, I've owned 30 cats and counting. From outdoor cats to bottle babies and everything in between. And I've worked with cats of just about every temperament. Coming from a family of animal lovers who have rescued dozens of pets and wildlife has given me a unique experience that shaped my love and understanding of animal behavior.
I have over a decade of experience as a veterinary technician in private practice, urgent care, and community cat clinics. I hold a Bachelor’s in Integrative Animal Biology (USF), a Master’s in Animal Shelter Medicine (UF), and I’m Fear‑Free and Cat‑Friendly certified. Currently, I’m a third‑year student at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.
For my master’s degree, I conducted research focused on cat behavior and began volunteering at my local shelter. I worked specifically with cats considered behaviorally challenging and quickly saw how misunderstood they were, often going months without being touched. I realized then that there was a severe lack of resources on safe, humane handling and management of fearful and aggressive cats, so I created this website to share my knowledge and skills. Through daily enrichment and socialization, I helped reduce fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS), improving their quality of life and chances of getting adopted. Since then, I’ve continued working with fearful and aggressive cats in shelters, veterinary and TNR clinics, and foster homes, developing training videos and educational materials to help others better understand and care for cats with complex behavioral needs.
